There are however four things to note firstly the colors can sometimes be a little red-based so require manual picking. ItвЂ™s the third most used program out there, and for $35 is a steal. There are also forums and an email for support and issues. ItвЂ™s been created by a non-stitcher, but their understanding of our needs is great. They give you a good base, but it's a lot of work to make the patterns look polished.KG Chart has a fantastic set of stitches, incredible ease of use, and a lot of regular, and worthwhile updates. None of the programs will spit out a perfect photo cross stitch.

I've never gotten anything great out of it, but I also don't have the patience to fix to patterns. It's pricey (I got a free license years ago). To add to that, I've also used Stitches for Mac. The free version of PCStitch does not let you save or print your pattern. Has little features IвЂ™ve never encountered, including automatic messages prompting you to save every 30 minutes to 2 hours. It is expensive ($49.95) and the UI is a little strange and takes a little while to work around, but it works so well. They have almost every brand of floss and colours, including variegated and metallic threads.

PCStitch: Last but certainly not least, this is my favourite.

It lets you save and print your progress but limits the size of the project you can create. The lite version can be found through google. If you can still find backdated copies of the lite version, known as KG Chart LE, kicking around, I recommend it. A small warning, they only carry DMC thread colours, and some colour samples arenвЂ™t what the true colour of the floss is.

KG Chart: Used to have a lite version to download free, now they have upgraded to pay only.

ItвЂ™s also been heard that Macstitch can and sometimes will crash. It costs between 60-80 dollars for a regular hard copy disk, unknown at this time for buying the downloadable program. Be warned, they will charge you for upgrades and from what IвЂ™ve heard, can be pretty annoying.

Mac- and Win-stitch: Strangely, the company sends it as a physical disk or USB drive unless you order a downloadable copy.

ItвЂ™s also advertised for machine embroidery, but thatвЂ™s a little beside the point. Costs $60.00 for standard and $120.00 for professional.

Hobbyware: Software for either converting photos or for designing. IвЂ™ve had strange colour conversions, but in general works quite well.

Cstitch: Open source, generally best used for converting photos into patterns.
